Construction began in Summerside during the early 2000’s and is still actively
underway. When completed, residential units in Summerside will be 75 percent
low-density in character and 25 percent medium-density. The neighbourhood will
contain a variety of park spaces and two school sites once complete. A business and
office park is located along Parsons Road on the neighbourhood’s western border, and
small community-level commercial facilities are located along Ellerslie Road to the
north.
Summerside's most significant feature is the 13-hectare and 28-foot-deep Summerside Lake, located in the western portion of the neighbourhood. Summerside Lake was Edmonton’s first purpose-built man-made lake; created for the sole purpose of providing residents with recreational space where they can swim, fish, and use non-motorized vehicles. All residents are required to hold memberships with the Summerside Residents Association and pay an annual maintenance fee to enjoy exclusive use of the lake.
Location
Summerside is located on the southern edge of Edmonton bounded by Ellerslie Road (9th Avenue SW) to the north, 66th Street to the east, 25th Avenue to the south, and Parsons Road (91st Street) to the west.
Sports and Recreation
The Summerside Residents Associations hosts activities such as yoga, pilates, music, swimming, tennis, beach volleyball, canoeing, dance, karate, kickboxing, horseshoes, skating and hockey. Many social and recreational activities take place in the 3,200-square foot community hall and sundeck.
Local Amenities
South Edmonton Common is a major shopping area northwest of Summerside. It features 2.3 million square feet of dining, shopping and entertainment space spread over 320 acres making it one of the largest open-air retail developments in North America. There are also many restaurants, grocery stores, banks and other retail businesses along Ellerslie Road.
